I had the privilege of contributing to Focus on the Family’s newest books. Each book is a compilation of insight and wisdom.
So I’m curious….What’s the best advice you ever got on parenting?

What’s the best advice you ever got on marriage?
Best advice on parenting: God, the perfect parent, had very imperfect kids, so stop expecting perfection from yours!
Best advice on marriage: Don’t nag, pray.
Parenting: God, even knowing all your faults, still knew you would be the best parent to that child, so listen to your own instincts.
Marriage: Your spouse gets to decide what is loving/respectful to them.
This really resonated with me as we often try to show love/respect how we would like to receive it instead of how our spouse views it.
The best advice I have been given on parenting has been recently. My son’s father passed away a week ago Saturday, and I have been worried about him. I was told to let him grieve, but don’t stop his activities. He went to school everday, except for the funeral. He was allowed to skip one football practice and we have been steadily going. He is still sad, but I feel this was the best advice that I could have been given. He grieves his father and misses him, but he realizes life is still going on and he is watching over us. We will see him again, and he is ableto walk again and have no pain.
The best parenting advise came from my mom. It was that we should be raising in children in such a way that others can enjoy them as much as we do.
The best marriage advise I got was that it doesn’t matter what my husband is doing, I am called to respect him and my actions are not to be in reaction to what he does but in obedience to what God has commanded me to do.
Read “The Five Love Languages” by Gary Chapman together, then regularly re-read your spouse’s top 3 choices to remind yourself how best to show your love.
Read “Letters to Karen” or “Letters to Philip” by Charlie Shedd – some old fashioned advice you can modify to the current day, with wisdom throughout.
Marriage: Choose your battles wisely, pray the Word of God over your spouse & encourage your spouse daily. (Death & life are in the power of the tongue & those that love it will eat its fruit.)
Parenting: Pray the word of God over your children, ask Almighty God for wisdom daily, remember every day is a new day, & every child is not the same.
Best advice I ever got on parenting OR on marriage was this: Say less. Pray more.
(Love the blog, by the way. The one this week on change was especially insightful. Congratulations to you on all your writing, speaking, conference success!)
